Saskatchewan Parks is reminding everyone to stay water safe as the province marks Drowning Prevention Week from July 20 to 26, 2025 — a critical reminder as thousands of residents head to lakes, rivers, and pools across the province this summer.
“Water safety is not just important for park visitors,” said Alana Ross, minister of Parks, Culture and Sport.
“It is critical for everyone who spends time around water, whether it is boating on the lake, swimming in a backyard pool or fishing on a quiet river.”
A key initiative aimed at reducing water-related tragedies is the Lifejacket Loaner Station program, run in partnership with the Lifesaving Society Saskatchewan. Free personal flotation devices (PFDs) in a range of sizes are available at 24 stations province-wide, including Elmview and Maple Vale beaches at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park — both popular destinations for Moose Jaw-area residents.
“Personal flotation devices add a level of protection for swimmers and non-swimmers alike, whether they are worn in a boat or while swimming in open water,” said Shelby Rushton, CEO of Lifesaving Society Saskatchewan.
"Donning a PFD from one of the loaner stations is an easy way to stay safe and an added bonus is that the PFDs are free to use; just put them back at the station once you are done.”
Sask Parks and the Lifesaving Society also shared these key water safety reminders:
- Always swim with a buddy.
- Always keep children within arm’s reach.
- Avoid alcohol while swimming or boating.
- Wear a properly fitted lifejacket or PFD when on or near open water.

Ross encouraged everyone to enjoy time on the water safely and responsibly.
“I encourage everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time on the water this summer, creating lasting memories with loved ones."
