Thomas “Tom” James Mathieson
August 11, 1950 – July 20, 2025

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the sudden and unexpected death of Thomas James Mathieson, 74 years of Watson, on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at his residence.  Tom was born on August 11, 1950 to John “Jack” and Esther “Beth” (nee Campbell) Mathieson in Watson.  He obtained his primary education at Daisy School until 1960 and then Watson Public School.  Tom loved music and played the saxophone and drums. He especially enjoyed playing the drums in the Watson Marching Band.  At an early age, Tom was always ready to get involved in school activities. Following high school, he attended the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.  Tom had a thirst for knowledge and a love for economics and numbers.

Tom married his high school sweetheart Joanne Fetter on September 16, 1972 who was the love of his life.  They were blessed with four children Holly, Jeff, Brad and Chantelle. They began their life together living in Saskatoon, Regina and Yorkton.  The pull of the land brought them back to Watson and they began the process of purchasing the farm. They became the 3rd generation of Mathieson’s to farm the homestead.  Tom loved every aspect of farming and took pride in the family farm.  Tom was very active in his community and sat on many boards.  He was a local school board trustee with the Humboldt Rural School Division. He worked on the UGG Board where he dedicated time to the global farming community.  He was an avid reader and loved reading books on a variety of topics, especially biographies.  Tom was always ready to share his books with everyone, he donated many to the local library.

His role as a father was very committed and busy.  Tom could be seen with his children in a vehicle driving them to events, in the stands cheering them on or on the bench coaching.  He was very present in the lives of all four of his children.  Tom loved cycling and it was very common for the family to go biking together.  Tom retired in 2010 from his daily farming routine and continued to live on the farm homestead and help Jeff when needed in all areas of the farm.  The grandchildren were fortunate to have grandpa to themselves a little more often once retirement came.  Grandpa attended every possible event or concert his grandkids took part in.  His love for all eight of them was very special.  Tom and Joanne enjoyed many trips to Mexico and B.C. and overseas, always finding interesting places to explore.  They made many friendships with the people they met and traveled with. Tom’s love for music continued into the later years which took them to the Watrous Danceland for many wonderful evenings of dancing. They also loved going to the Jazz Festival in Saskatoon.

Tom will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years JOANNE Mathieson of Watson; four children and eight grandchildren:
