Smoke from wildfires in northern Saskatchewan is again moving into the southern part of the province. This has prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue air quality warnings for Weyburn, along with much of the southern half of the province.
The smoke is expected to cause very poor air quality and reduced visibility in some areas today. The air quality is expected to begin to improve tomorrow.
The nature of the smoke means the conditions will fluctuate hour to hour and over short distances.
Environment Canada recommends people limit their time outdoors and reschedule or cancel outdoor sports and events. The smoke may cause some symptoms, such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, or a mild cough. More severe but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains, or a severe cough.
There are currently 59 wildfires burning in Saskatchewan, with four contained, 14 not contained, 14 undergoing assessment, and 18 crews are protecting values. The fires have also prompted evacuations. Currently, 10 communities are evacuated, according to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency.
