The recent announcement by BHP regarding a delay in production startup and phase 2 development has registered in one local community.

The Town on Lanigan, in its “Lanigan Lowdown – Mayor's Snapshot” release to residents, acknowledges the recent announcement on shifts to the Jansen project. BHP has stated that production startup will revert to mid-2027 from its previously projected 2026 initial production. Also Stage 2 of the mine's construction is now targeted to 2031, two years later than forecast.

Tony Mycock, mayor of Lanigan, reflected that the delay might provide the town with some actual benefits.

“In fact, it helps us with some additional breathing space for development readiness,” Mycock states in the release. “Our growth strategies consider a much bigger picture than any one development in the region. Besides BHP’s new mine, Nutrien Lanigan Potash has been around for over 60 years, and the Aspen Power Station is under construction. We have a strong local business and regional agricultural community and economy with significant local and regional agricultural industry.”

The statement reinforces the idea that the town will continue with its strategic plan released with the installation of the new council. Efforts on investment and attraction are paying off, Mycock noted, with construction beginning on the new Shell/Dairy Queen development and more commercial inquiries coming in.

Add to that the recent completion of the new Lanigan K-12 school and the construction of the new daycare under way, Lanigan looks forward to future development and prosperity.

Mycock concluded, “Stay tuned for more exciting updates as they happen!”
