Strathmore's summer is looking more like spring this year with cooler temperatures and steady rainfall replacing the hot, dry conditions of past summers.

Over the past week, the region has experienced several days of rain, fluctuating temperatures, and smoky air quality.

Environment Canada (EC) spoke about the changes on Tuesday (July 22).

"We had a cold front sweeping into the province, bringing with it some showery weather and then some instability in the upper levels of our atmosphere," said Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with EC. "Those two things interacting are just bringing in a persistent area of rainfall into southern Alberta."

Climenhaga mentioned that June is typically the rainiest month in the region, with average rainfall around 112.7 millimetres. July normally sees about 65.7 millimetres of precipitation.

However, this year, July has been the rainiest month so far.

"The Calgary area has reported 107.4mm in the month of July, so well over normal already. By the end of the day, we may be in that realm of doubling our normal July rainfall," Climenhaga reported.

While it's not the rainiest July on record for Alberta, the temperatures are also trending cooler than usual.

"These [temperatures] will be well below seasonal - seasonal for the area, being a low of about 10 C - we will likely be more of that 5 or 6 C in Calgary and then further to the west into the foothills closer to the freezing mark."

Climenhaga said temperatures are expected to rise toward the 20s at the end of the week.
