On Aug. 25, 2024, Airdrie Rural RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 2, just north of Airdrie.
One of the drivers, a 56-year-old male resident of Edmonton, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger from the vehicle was transported by STARS Air Ambulance to Alberta Children’s Hospital, while the second driver was taken to hospital by ground ambulance, with non-life-threatening injuries.
On Monday, following an extensive investigation, Airdrie RCMP arrested Muhammad Akmal (26), a Calgary resident, in relation to this incident. He has been charged with the following:

Adult Operation While Impaired Causing Bodily Harm
Adult Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death
Adult Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm
Akmal will appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Airdrie on Sept. 2, 2025.
