Did you get a text claiming you have an unpaid parking or photo radar ticket in Calgary? Be cautious, as it’s a scam.

Calgary Police Services (CPS) is warning the public (Calgary and the surrounding area, including Airdrie) of an emerging scam after we have received several reports of victims receiving text messages to pay outstanding parking and photo radar fines in recent weeks.

"There have been more than 25 reports of Calgarians receiving text messages stating they are required to pay overdue tickets, encouraging them to click a link to complete payment."

According to CPS, the City of Calgary and the Government of Alberta will not send text messages to request payment for fines.

"Photo radar tickets and parking tickets are mailed to the registered owner of a vehicle, and subsequent communication involving overdue fines will also be sent via mail."

CPS also provided some tips on how to avoid falling for a catching these scams before it is too late.

  •  If you receive an unsolicited text message with a link attached, do not click the link
  • Do not provide any payment or personal information through text message
  • Delete the text message immediately and do not engage

It is important to report to your local RCMP or police services if you have had financial loss or had your personal information compromised.
