Happy Cat Sanctuary Society of Alberta is warning Strathmore residents about a recent cheque scam.

According to a social media post, the society received fraudulent donation cheques in an attempt to commit cheque fraud.

"These look somewhat legitimate but are fake," wrote the group on social media. "It started with an email telling us we were going to receive a donation of a certain amount from the estate of a woman who had passed away."

Happy Cat warns that other rescues are being targeted, asking fellow businesses to be cautious and verify all incoming cheques before depositing them.

"Unfortunately, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is," added Happy Cat.

The organization has reported the attempted fraud to Strathmore RCMP.
