The crime severity index statistics released by Statistics Canada are encouraging, according to Moose Jaw Police Service acting chief Rick Johns.
The statistics showed crime rates were down, with a total of 3,734 actual incidents in 2024 — a decrease of 4.7 per cent.
The Moose Jaw Police Service cleared 1,933 cases in 2024, compared to 1,595 in 2023. This included 1,746 cases cleared by charges.
“We are also pleased to see that our clearance rates further increased in 2024 over 2023 (where we led the province in comparison to the Saskatchewan average),” Johns said in a written statement to Discover Moose Jaw.
“This is an indication that we continue to improve on solving crime and holding people accountable.”
He added that it appears 2025 will continue to trend downward.
The Moose Jaw Police Service’s crime severity index in 2024 decreased by 11.79 per cent to 103.87. The violent crime severity index dropped 3.77 per cent from 104.2 to 100.27. The most significant drop was in the non-violent crime severity index, from 124.15 in 2023 to 106.18 in 2024.
“Essentially, the stats suggest that we experienced less crime as it relates to the crime severity index in 2024 and of those that did occur, we cleared more,” Johns said.
Johns added that the improvements made by the Moose Jaw Police Service over the past year are largely due to the “ongoing support we get from the community and the dedication of our officers and support staff of the Moose Jaw Police Service that work hard every day to improve the safety in our community.”
