A 26-year-old driver is facing a mandatory court appearance after being caught speeding at 170 kilometres per hour on Highway 27 in Mountain View County earlier this month.

RCMP say the incident happened the evening of Sunday, July 12, near the intersection of Highway 27 and Highway 791, east of Olds.

The posted speed limit in the area is 100 km/h.

Police have not released the driver’s name but say they are scheduled to appear in provincial court on Sept. 5.

"Speeding at this magnitude is not just illegal — it’s dangerous," Olds RCMP said in a statement posted to social media on July 13. "Thanks to the vigilance of our members, another reckless driver has been taken off the road."
