Rocky View County has issued an urgent wastewater advisory for Bragg Creek residents due to unusually high flows in the system that may cause backups.
In a public notice issued Thursday, July 24, 2025, the County said the Bragg Creek wastewater system is experiencing “higher than normal flows, putting it at risk of overload and potential backups.”
“We need your help to reduce pressure on the system immediately,” the County said.
Residents are asked to “limit water use as much as possible.” That includes delaying laundry, minimizing toilet flushing, reducing dishwasher use, and avoiding long showers.
“If you have a sump pump, make sure it is not discharging into the sanitary sewer system,” the notice said.
The County confirmed that “drinking water is not affected.”
“Rocky View County is working to investigate the situation,” the notice said. “Updates will be available at rockyview.ca.”
“If you have questions, please contact Utility Services at 403-230-1401.”
“Thank you for helping protect our homes and local infrastructure,” the County added.
“We’ve seen unusually high flows in some areas of the County’s sewer system, and one possible cause is sump pumps that are incorrectly connected,” the County said in a follow-up section of the same notice.
“If your home has a sump pump, it should be discharged outside, never into the sanitary sewer system.”
“Sump pumps are meant to move groundwater away from your home’s foundation, not into the wastewater system. When they’re hooked into the sewer line, it can overwhelm the system, cause backups, and increase maintenance costs.”
“Make sure your sump pump drains outside, well away from your home,” the County said. “If you're unsure or think it may be connected to your sewer line, a licensed plumber can help fix it.”
