The Community Foundation of Portage & District has received a second generous donation from the estate of the late Richard (Dick) Lynwood Street.

Lorna Knight, executive director of the foundation, notes, “This donation was $61,250. This was the final payout from the late Richard Lynwood Street’s estate. We had received funds from this estate before, but this is the final payout as per his wishes.”

The foundation previously received $50,000 from the estate in 2023.

Supporting local groups through grants

Knight says the funds go directly into the foundation’s Smart & Caring Community Fund.

“This fund supports the payouts for our spring and fall grants. The monies go right into that granting cycle, which helps support local nonprofit organizations and groups that submit applications for projects and initiatives here in Portage la Prairie.”

She adds, “We are very grateful for such a generous gift and are privileged to honor his legacy. The larger the fund, the greater the grants we can allocate to the community, which is really important because we see the difference it makes in grassroots and established organizations doing work right here at home. In 2024, this fund allowed us to allocate over $315,000 to community projects.”

Encouraging community support

Knight mentions, “There are two rounds — one in the spring, one in the fall. Our next intake is October, and information is available on our website or at our office, where we also provide paper copies. Recent changes mean groups that are not charities can now apply, which has opened up opportunities for many new organizations we haven’t seen before.”

She continues, “At the Community Foundation of Portage and District, we have many options for folks looking to leave legacy gifts. My biggest suggestion is to reach out and speak with us in person. Everyone has different affiliations or ideas about how they want to leave funds, maybe towards a bursary or another cause. We’re happy to chat and help people create their legacy, just as Richard Lynwood Street did.”

The foundation welcomes donations to its various funds online at www.cfpdi.ca/makeadonation or in person at 206 Saskatchewan Avenue East, Portage la Prairie.
