On Saturday, the 12th annual Korean War Veterans Day Ceremony to mark the 72nd Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice took place in Airdrie.

The Airdrie Legion Branch 288, dignitaries representing the Calgary Korean Association and special guest Lieutenant General Derek Macaulay, the deputy commander of the United Nations Command, were in attendance.

Keith Shaw, the past president of the Airdrie Legion said 170 people were in attendance.

"We filled the town and country with invited guests. The entertainment was spectacular, the food was spectacular, but most of all, the ceremony honouring the veterans who served in the Korean War was spectacular."

He went on to explain that the Korean War is often know as the Forgotten War, but is a very large moment in Canadian military history.

"It's important that we remember these people and bring that information to the people of Airdrie, and allow them to celebrate with us."

The reason Airdrie plays host to the event each year is because Airdrie is home of a monument that commemorates the courage of the Veterans from the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Regiment, who bravely fought in the crucial battle from April 22-25, 1951, contributing to the defence of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, during the Korean War.

The monument also stands as a symbol of the enduring 60-year diplomatic bond between Canada and Korea.

The stone that the monument is made of was mined and transported from regions in South Korea where key battles were fought during the war.

The Korean War Gapyeong Battle Victory Monument in Airdrie weighs approximately 11.5 tons and stands 2.8 metres tall and 2.2 metres wide.

Langley, Winnipeg, Brampton and Niagara Falls are the other places in Canada to have monuments.
