On Sunday, Rekha Mehay announced that she is officially running for Airdrie City Council.

Mehay, who is also the owner and director of Little Learners Daycare, explained it was a great opportunity to meet with residents at her campaign launch and answer any questions they might have had. She went on to talk about why she is running for council.

"I love the city, and I believe in community-led change. I'm a mom to two teenagers. I've raised my kids here. I've grown my business from a home-based business into a commercial space. I'm deeply invested in the city. My family lives, learns and plays here. So naturally, I want to see Airdrie grow in every way possible."

When asked about what she hopes to accomplish if she were elected for a council position, one thing she hopes to do is streamline access to city services.

"I do want to streamline access to city supports such as licensing and space availability when it comes to small businesses. I'll also advocate for youth. I'm very passionate about their mental health, you know, putting resources in schools and the communities. And I believe that every young person deserves to feel safe and heard."

She hopes that Airdronians will approach her and ask any questions they may have.

'I want residents to know that their voice matters."

Mehay went on to talk about what it would mean to her to get elected to the council.

"It would just mean that everything that I've worked towards so far has been worth it. Coming here as a first-generation Canadian, my parents worked so hard to put me through school and educate me. I just feel like I have this platform, and if I can't use it for good, then it's gone to waste."

She concluded that she will be starting the door-knocking process soon and will be attending a number of different public events as well.

"I'd love to create more opportunities for connection, to bring City Hall closer to the voices of the community."
