Legislators from across North America are gathered in Saskatoon this week for the 79th annual Midwestern Legislative Conference (MLC), with Saskatchewan taking centre stage as host and current chair of the regional policy forum.

Running from July 27 to 30, the conference welcomes lawmakers from 11 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces to share ideas and strengthen collaboration on trade, infrastructure and energy security.

“This is an opportunity to strengthen our ties as neighbours and build partnerships that benefit our communities and constituents on both sides of the border,” said Rural and Remote Health Minister Lori Carr, who serves as MLC chair for 2025.

Saskatchewan became the first province granted full MLC membership in 2019, a move that has boosted its influence in shaping regional policy and expanded participation in key committees and initiatives.

“This conference reflects the economic strength of our region,” said Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding. “It underscores Saskatchewan’s commitment to resilient supply chains, investment attraction, and expanding trade with our U.S. partners.”

During her chairship, Carr led a key policy initiative, North American Energy Security: Powering the Future, aimed at fostering collaboration on the continent’s power and infrastructure strategies.

The Saskatoon event also features several prominent speakers, including former prime minister Stephen Harper, who delivered a keynote on the Canada-U.S. relationship. U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra, Life of Pi author Yann Martel, and futurist Samantha Jordan are also among the headliners.

Workshops, expert panels and site tours are rounding out the agenda, giving delegates the chance to explore Saskatchewan’s economy and innovations.
