Residents in Portage la Prairie are starting to see their new solid waste carts arrive this week, with deliveries beginning for Route 1.
The first automated pickups for Zone 1 begin August 1st.

Each cart includes an information package with your first pickup date, along with a QR code that links to more details about the city’s new automated garbage collection system.
City staff remind residents to take note of how the cart is placed upon delivery; as that’s exactly how it should be positioned on collection day.
Tips for proper cart placement:
- Place cart wheels against the curb without blocking the road or bike lanes
- Leave 1 metre of space around the cart
- Keep carts clear of vehicles, poles, or other barriers
- Ensure the lid is completely closed; overflowing carts won’t be picked up
The City says its contractor will use a tagging system on lids to flag issues such as overfilled carts or incorrect placement.
