The University of Manitoba recently honoured three well-deserving agricultural leaders with the 2025 Certificate of Merit, Cathey Day, Fred Greig, and Kim McConnell.

The Certificate of Merit is presented by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and the School of Agriculture in recognition of leadership with agriculture, agri-food and community organizations and for outstanding service to the public at large.

Since 1981, the University of Manitoba’s Certificate of Merit 'has honoured over 95 individuals.

Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Dean Martin Scanlon says our alumni have deep and lasting impacts not only within their professions, but also in their communities. 

"These honourees are a true inspiration for young people who are considering studies and careers that will advance Canada’s agri-food sector."

Each year up to three Certificates of Merit are presented to graduates of FAFS Degree programs, to graduates of the former Home Economics/Human Ecology Degree programs, and to graduates of the FAFS Diploma program.

Nominations are considered by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Executive Committee.

2025 Certificate of Merit Recipients include:

Cathey Day - A passionate community builder, Cathey has dedicated her life to rural development and education, championing initiatives that strengthen local economies and empower future generations. Cathey's bio can be found here.

Fred Greig - A respected advocate for farmers, Fred has played a pivotal role in shaping agricultural policy and advancing research that benefits producers across Manitoba and beyond.  Fred's bio can be found here.

Kim McConnell - A trailblazer in agricultural marketing, Kim has transformed how Canadian agriculture is perceived globally and continues to mentor emerging leaders in the industry.  Kim's bio can be found here.

Nominations for the 2026 Certificate of Merit will open later this year.
