The provincial government is predicting that Alberta will add around 2 million more residents over the next 27 years.

They believe the population will reach 6.9 million by 2051, an average growth of 1.3 per cent. Alberta currently has a population around 4.85 million.

"The majority of the expected growth will be due to migration, with 63 per cent coming from international migration and 21 per cent from interprovincial migration. Natural increase is projected to account for the remaining 16 per cent of the growth."

According to provincial projection, they believe Airdrie will have a population of around 170,000 by 2051.

Earlier this year, the City of Airdrie released its census results, and as of April 1st, Airdrie sat at a population of over 90,000. This represents a 4,239-resident increase over the previous year.

Council documents note census data is “a cornerstone for the City’s long-term planning for municipal services, allocating funds, and understanding community needs.” The data also supports planning for schools, recreation, emergency services, and infrastructure projects.

In 2024, Airdrie’s population was 85,805, representing a 6.39 per cent growth rate from 2023.

According to the City of Airdrie's website, a population prediction for 2025 previously forecasted the 2025 population as 91,078 residents, representing a predicted 5.8 per cent growth in population. However, the website underlines that, "City administration creates a population forecast biannually in April and September. This forecast is a simplified representation of the April 2024 forecast and may have since been adjusted."
