At the regular meeting of Humboldt City Council on Monday, July 29, the Council voted on the adoption of a bylaw to support its South Area Structure Plan.

As reported at its July Executive Meeting, the Housing Accelerator Fund through the CMHC was prepared to entertain an additional funding submission from the City based on its exceeding targeted goals for its previous HAF initiatives.

The initial proposed area of the structure plan was the land south of 1st Avenue North, east of 14th Street, west of 4th street, north of the city limits, and the undeveloped land south of Saskatchewan Avenue. The plan scope has since been expanded to include the land east of Peck Road and south of the industrial area.

A detailed series of maps provided to Council (available on the City’s website) examined existing roads, stormwater management, and land use in the context of existing bylaws. The City Administration noted that precise locations of roads, storm ponds and other features of future developments would be in consultation with developers and consistent with studies on the area done by engineers.

The potential resulting grant from the application is an additional $226,000 over three years. CMHC has projected that this project will result in seven additional housing units.

The bylaw adopting the South Area Structure Plan received three readings and was passed, clearing the way for the grant application to proceed. The deadline for that application is August 29.
