With the July 31 property tax deadline approaching, the City of Portage la Prairie is reminding residents that there are multiple payment and prepayment options available, including a way to save a few dollars earlier in the year.
The City allows taxpayers to prepay up to 90 per cent of the previous year’s net tax levy between January and June. Those who choose to prepay are eligible for a discount that varies depending on the month.
January is 0.66 per cent, February is 0.55 per cent, and it drops a bit each month until June at 0.11 per cent.
Taxes are considered at par in July. Late payments begin accruing a penalty of 1.25 per cent per month starting August 1.
Taxpayers have several options when it comes to paying their bill. The City accepts online banking payments, Telpay, cheques by mail, post-dated cheques, or payments through the after-hours drop-off box located on the east door of City Hall. E-transfers and in-person payments using debit are also available.
“Allow sufficient time for your payment to be received by the City on or before the due date,” adds the City.
Residents also have the option to spread out their payments through the TIPP (Tax Installment Payment Plan) program. Monthly payments are automatically withdrawn from a bank or credit union account.
More information is available by contacting the Tax Department or visiting the city’s website.
