If you or your child have burning questions about fire safety, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) and their special guests have the answers during a presentation coming to Moose Jaw in August.
The presentation, led by public education program coordinator Anara Arcand, will focus on key safety lessons—all with a kid friendly twist.
“During the presentation, the kids will learn about what is an emergency and what they should do if they're ever in an emergency,” said Arcand.
“We go over smoke alarms, their importance and making sure that they're working, then we also go over fire drills and emergency preparedness.”
Teaching, reinforcing, and sharing good habits at an early age is the goal, one that according to Arcand, is aided by keeping things exciting.
“When you have the presentation with the kids and get them excited about fire safety through Sparky the Fire Dog and them getting to take home the plastic fire hats, we definitely hope that they go home and become advocates to their families and friends and keep spreading the message,” she explained.
While the addition of Sparky the Fire Dog certainly helps keep the excitement going, Arcand noted that there is the possibility of some other special guests joining them.
“We always reach out to the local fire department and encourage them to join,” she said. “A lot of the time the fire department brings their fire trucks, and they get involved in some other activities with the kids to help them see firefighters, their equipment, so that they're not scared when an emergency happens and there are firefighters involved.”
She added that the program has been very well received by attendees, with survey feedback described as "really phenomenal".
“The feedback we've gotten is really phenomenal. After we're done at the presentations, we always send a survey out and the feedback we've gotten on the survey has been great.”
The presentation is completely free of charge to attend and will take place at the Moose Jaw Public Library on Friday, Aug. 8, from 11 a.m. to noon.
