Coun. Dawn Luhning raised concerns about a couple of walking trail gaps during Monday night’s city council meeting.

In particular, she asked city administration about pedestrians walking from the Yara Centre to Ninth Avenue Northwest.

She said she’s seen people walking on the shoulder of the road, including an instructor who walks the route daily, and she had safety concerns.

Director of operations Bevan Harlton responded that the gap will be addressed in the city’s Trails Master Plan.

“That’s a gap that’s been identified in the Trails Master Plan. Over on the engineering side, we’re doing corridor studies on a couple of locations in the city,” Harlton said.

“As well, we’re doing a cycling network concept and the Yara Centre and servicing it back to Ninth Avenue is absolutely on the radar and we're looking for some concepts and recommendations to connect that gap.”

Luhning also raised concerns about the walking trails north of Thatcher Drive at the intersection with Main Street.

She said she recently had people visiting from out of town and they couldn’t get to the Golden Ticket Sports Centre for the trails because there is no walking path there with medians in the way.

Harlton said that situation was a bit more complicated and he needed more time to provide an explanation.

“That’s a location that warrants a discussion, and I prefer to put our response from operations back in writing because there’s a story to be told there and a discussion to be had about that location and how we prioritize improving that corridor,” Harlton said.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for Aug. 11 at 4:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall.
