Airdrie RCMP is warning the public about the dangers and legal consequences associated with air guns, airsoft guns, and imitation firearms.

In a news release issued Wednesday, the detachment said these items are often marketed as recreational or hobby equipment but can pose serious risks—especially when displayed or used in public.

“Air guns are not toys,” the release stated. “If carried or displayed in public, they can easily be mistaken for real firearms—leading to serious police response and possible criminal charges.”

Police said all firearm-related reports must be treated as real threats. Imitation guns used to commit offences such as robbery, threats, or assault can lead to charges under the Criminal Code, which defines air guns as firearms when used in a crime.

The RCMP also noted that most Alberta municipalities—including smaller towns—have local bylaws that prohibit the discharge of air guns, BB guns, and pellet guns within city or town limits. These bylaws typically:

  • Ban discharging any firearm, including airguns, within municipal boundaries;

  • Define “firearm” to include anything that fires a projectile;

  • Apply even on private property unless the land is specifically zoned for shooting.

Carrying an imitation firearm in public may alarm the public and result in a heightened police response, the release stated.

Residents are urged to store air guns securely, avoid bringing them into public spaces, and educate youth and household members about the risks of misuse.
