Portage la Prairie drivers should prepare for ongoing road work with new phases starting this week, including lane closures and detours in key areas.
Matt Phillips, manager of engineering for the City of Portage la Prairie, provides the latest update on several projects.
Work on Crescent Road West between 4th Street SW and 12th Street SW is progressing, with excavation expected to be backfilled with limestone by Thursday evening. Phillips notes that next week crews will begin compacting the base and working on density to prepare for the concrete pour.
He says the goal is to have the Crescent Road section completed by the start of September.
Meanwhile, phase two of the 34 West project will begin barricading Thursday night, with detours starting at that time. The closure will affect Lincoln Avenue and McCain Avenue, lasting approximately two weeks.
Drivers will also see work beginning on two patches on Saskatchewan Avenue this Thursday or Friday, including sections east of 3rd Street NE and between 2nd and 3rd Street NE. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane, with detours in place.
Next week, the city plans to bring in asphalt milling equipment to start overlay work on several streets, including 6th Avenue NW, Lorne Avenue West, and a stretch of Elm Street near the Co-op in the west.
Phillips encourages motorists to follow all posted signage and plan extra time for their commutes.
Residents and visitors are reminded that Crescent Road West remains fully closed between 4th and 12th Street SW, with reopening expected by September 2 as originally scheduled.
