Moosomin is set for a busy long weekend as thousands of visitors are expected to roll into town for Living Skies Come Alive. The annual fireworks competition takes place August 2 and 3 at Moosomin and District Regional Park.
The event features Team Saskatchewan and Team Alberta, each putting on a custom fireworks show over the lake. A panel of judges will choose the winner following Sunday night’s display.
“It’s a fireworks competition between Saskatchewan and Alberta,” said Kyle Jeannot, chair of the entertainment committee. “Saturday night is Saskatchewan’s turn, Sunday is Alberta’s, and we have judges pick a winner at the end of the weekend.”
The fireworks are launched from barges set up on the water, with music timed to each display. Organizers say this is a high-quality show that offers more than your typical long weekend celebration.
“This isn’t a 10-minute show from the hardware store,” Jeannot said. “These are custom-made fireworks set to music. One year they played Fireball and had six fireballs go off across the lake. You could feel the heat.”
The beach behind the Moose Mountain General Store is the main viewing area. Jeannot says attendance has remained strong since the event returned after a short pause during the pandemic, with 3,500 to 4,000 people attending each day.
“This is an all-volunteer board,” he said. “We have some local sponsors, but it’s really the community that makes it happen.”
The weekend also includes family activities, food trucks, and evening entertainment. Beer gardens will be open, with Route 605 performing Saturday and Sean Taylor playing Sunday night.
Wristbands are $25 per night for ages six and up. Kids five and under get in free. Tickets are available at the gate when you arrive.
With traffic expected to pick up early in the evening, visitors are encouraged to arrive well before the 10:00 p.m. showtime.
“Between 6:00 and 10:00 it gets very congested,” Jeannot said. “There’s parking and shuttle service available, but it’s good to give yourself extra time.”
