Dozens of bed frames, dressers, and other hotel furniture rescued from the fire-damaged Quality Inn in Winkler will go up for auction Monday, with all proceeds going toward international aid efforts.
Faith Mission Executive Director Nathan Elias says what began as a simple offer to salvage usable furniture turned into something much bigger.
“Some of the stuff we were able to send to Ukraine or to the needy overseas and the rest of it we’re going to sell as a fundraiser.” - Elias, referring to the hotel room items up for auction.
The auction will take place at Faith Mission’s facility just off Cargill Road. Bidding begins at 10:00 a.m. Monday, and people can preview the items Friday and Saturday during the day. Elias says everything is still in very good condition, and the sale is open to anyone looking for a great deal while supporting a meaningful cause.
What Faith Mission is all about
Many locals pass by Faith Mission without realizing the work that happens inside. Elias says there is often confusion about what they do.
“They think it’s a thrift store or a church or something. We are neither of those two.”
Instead, Faith Mission collects clothing, bedding, and supplies which are then sorted and packed to be shipped overseas to countries like Ukraine, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, and Georgia. The organization works with churches in those regions, helping them use the aid as an outreach tool to connect with vulnerable families.
Elias has seen this impact firsthand. He recently returned from a mission trip to the country of Georgia, where he experienced the culture and met people benefitting from their support.

A family legacy and a leap of faith
Elias grew up around Faith Mission. His father, Jake Elias, was one of the founders in the early 1990s, and their family yard was the first headquarters.
“Faith Mission started on our yard. It was part of our education,” he shared.
After noticing a decline in donations last year, Elias began praying for new ideas to raise funds. He had considered hosting a live auction but hesitated to commit to something so large. That changed when an insurance company reached out about salvaging furniture from the fire at the Quality Inn.
“It was an opportunity that kind of landed in our lap,” he said.
