The Government of Saskatchewan is investing over $53 million this year into southwest Saskatchewan’s highway infrastructure — a move aimed at keeping the province’s export-based economy on the move, with several projects set to benefit the Kindersley area.

The work includes paving, grading, culvert replacements and ongoing maintenance, with Education Minister and Swift Current MLA Everett Hindley saying the upgrades demonstrate the province’s ongoing commitment to supporting the transportation network that fuels the economy.

“Our road network is a key link in getting Saskatchewan goods and products throughout the province, across Canada and around the world,” said Hindley, speaking on behalf of Highways Minister David Marit. “We appreciate the patience of all motorists and remind drivers to obey signage and flag persons in work zones.”

Locally, one of the highlighted projects is a $3.4 million investment to improve the driving surface of about 4.5 kilometres of Highway 44 between Glidden and Eston. That work began in May and is scheduled to wrap up this summer.

Elsewhere in the region, grading and culvert replacements are underway on more than 24 kilometres of Highway 51 west of Biggar — a project valued at $15.9 million, with paving yet to be tendered.

“This investment supports businesses, tourism and helps keep our communities connected,” said Corla Rokochy, CEO of the Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce. “We value the government’s commitment to economic opportunity through infrastructure.”

Since 2008, Saskatchewan has invested more than $13.8 billion in transportation infrastructure, improving more than 21,800 kilometres of highways.

Drivers are encouraged to check the Highway Hotline for construction updates and travel information before heading out.
