Alberta RCMP is reminding motorists to stay safe behind the wheel as the province heads into the Heritage Day long weekend.

“Many collisions are preventable,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic. “By following safe driving practices, such as leaving early, staying alert, and driving according to conditions, we can help ensure Alberta’s roadways are safe for everyone this August long weekend.”

In a statement Wednesday, police urged drivers not to operate a vehicle while impaired, saying alcohol and drugs “can impact your judgment, coordination, and reaction time.” They advised all drivers to “always arrange a safe ride home.”

RCMP also warned against distracted driving, which they said is not limited to texting or handheld phone use. It can also include grooming, reading, writing, adjusting devices, or attending to passengers or pets.

Drivers are reminded that posted speed limits apply only in ideal conditions. Police say motorists should slow down based on weather, road, and traffic factors.

Seatbelt use remains mandatory. “Ensure yourself and other passengers are properly secured in seatbelts or child safety seats before putting your vehicle in motion,” the release said.

Police also advised drivers to be mindful of cyclists, pedestrians, and off-highway vehicles, and to check blind spots before turning or changing lanes.

Finally, the RCMP recommended letting family or friends know your travel route and expected arrival time.
