Family Tribute
Otto Braun, age 92 years, of Altona, Manitoba passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at the Altona Memorial Health Centre.
He is survived by his children Rhona (Terry) Klippenstein, Toni (Susi) Braun, and Eira (Martin) Braun-Labossiere, as well as by 2 grandchildren, and one brother. He was predeceased by his wife Esther Braun (nee Friesen), 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
If you knew Otto Braun (and as a man who surpassed 92, you probably did) you may have known him in different ways.
If you are his age, you may have watched him grow up as a shy young man who was thrilled to marry Esther Friesen, settle down, have a family and enthusiastically take on the Braun family farm.
If you fall into his kids' generation, you may remember him as the silly dad who blew his false teeth out to get a giggle at our birthday parties.
Otto was an introverted soul who loved his wife and family dearly. He will be remembered for his very silly and strange humour (to our delight and sometimes bewilderment), his devotion to photography (and we're talking about a LOT of photos), his incredible farmer work ethic, his pursuit of the perfect tomato, and his passion for potato side dishes (all of which I cannot spell in Plautdietsch!).
It must be noted that despite a limited formal education, undiagnosed dyslexia and a vocation requiring physical labour, this nonagenerian techie navigated his iPad like his life depended on it. His emails were never long but they were regular and usually filled with colourful photographic observations of his day to day.
As much as he loved that iPad, music was central to Dad's life as well. He had a beautiful, soft tenor voice and was very gifted at playing keyboard by ear. He had very specific taste in performers, but he spun everything from gospel hymns to easy listening, quartets to classical records on his turntable.
Otto was a man of deep conviction, with an assured sense of his spirituality; he was ready to meet his Maker.
The family would like to thank Dad's compassionate caregivers at the Manor and Altona Hospital. Thank you for doing your best to keep Dad comfortable to the very end.
Rest in peace, Dad.
A private memorial service will be held.
Donations in memory of Otto may be made to Build a Village (Altona).
