With it being the long weekend, the RCMP are reminding Albertans to drive safe.

For this weekend, the RCMP are reminding people to follow some tips to ensure they are driving safe this weekend.

Do not drive impaired, as alcohol and drugs can impact judgement, coordination, and reaction time.

Instead, arrange a safe ride home, as impaired driving is not only a legal issue, but also a matter of life and death.

On top of that, avoid all distractions.

According to the RCMP, distracted driving is not limited to texting or talking on a handheld device while driving, it includes other activities, such as personal grooming, reading, writing, adjusting GPS or audio devices, attending to passengers or pets, or any other activity that could impair the driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

They are also reminding people that the speed limit is the maximum speed for ideal conditions, so adjust your speed to accommodate for weather, road, and traffic conditions.

To help keep people in the vehicle safe, buckle up and make sure every passenger is properly secured in either a seatbelt or child safety seat before putting the vehicle in drive and hitting the road.

While out driving, be mindful of others on the road.

With summer comes more bikes, pedestrians, and off-highway vehicles, and always check blind spots.

Finally, let people know where you are planning to go.

Before hitting the road, make sure family and friends are aware of your planned route and when they can expect you.

"Many collisions are preventable," explained Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic in a media release. "By following safe driving practices, such as leaving early, staying alert, and driving according to conditions, we can help ensure Alberta’s roadways are safe for everyone this August long weekend."
