After 20 years of raising funds for local non-profit organizations, members of the Legends Car Club are looking for new opportunities after they were forced to cancel their annual Charity Airport Drag Races this year.
Club president, Alex Loewen, says the decision was made after it became quite difficult to obtain liability insurance for the event, which typically takes place in August near Altona.
"What it boils down to is the temporary nature of how we set up the track," he explained. "If this was a permanent race facility with permanent barricades and things like that, it would be one thing. But because we are converting an airport, that introduces more complexities from a liability perspective."

While disappointing, Loewen says it's difficult to argue with safety-related concerns.
Raising an average of $25,000 in each of the last two years, the annual drag races have been a major player in the club's ability to give back to the community over the decades, and Loewen says members will examine new opportunities to continue doing just that.
A permanent decision regarding the future of the annual charity drag races will be made later this year or early next year.
