Humboldt’s StreetFest is slated for August 22 and 23. The downtown community event was a summer hit last year following its full-blown revival. Before the stage goes up and the vendors arrive on site, there’s a lot of work to be done, says organizer Alyssa Hergott on behalf of the Humboldt Downtown Business Improvement District, the sponsoring organization.
While the entertainment line-up is taking shape with the Friday night dance set to feature rising star Brody Siebert and Humboldt’s own 40 Oz Philosophy, the boots on the ground need to be ready to go prior to the festivities.
“We need people to help with our set up and take down,” Hergott explains. “With our kids fest, we need supervisors for the bouncy castles – we have twelve hours' worth of shifts for that alone.”
In addition, there’s a clean-up squad needed during the day’s events, along with general tasks to support the crowd that’s expected in the downtown core.
More than half the shifts need to be filled, and while the City of Humboldt Public Works Department provides some support, supplies and street closure permissions, the work goes beyond their scope and that of the bid.
“This is definitely a community event, and it takes the whole community to help put it on, not just the four of us volunteer year-round at the board. We need people to step up to make events like this successful and to keep happening every year.”
One of the best parts, Hergott says, is that volunteers have a lot of fun, and they have a chance to meet new community members and people who come in from the region.
Volunteering for the event can meet your schedule whether you have an hour or a full day to commit. To volunteer you can send a quick message to the StreetFest Facebook page or click on this volunteer link.
