Moose Jaw’s own Drew Biette is making waves in the world of disc golf.
The 17-year-old athlete recently returned from the Junior Disc Golf World Championships held in Emporia, KS, from July 15 to 19, where he placed an impressive 23rd overall—an enormous leap from his 90th-place finish the previous year.
“It was a blast,” said Biette. “The tournament directors put on a great event. It was my last year competing in Junior Worlds, so placing 23rd made it special.”
The five-day international tournament featured four rounds of play, with a final round reserved for the top 40% of competitors. Biette’s performance earned him a spot in that elite group, showcasing his growth and dedication to the sport over the past four years.
Disc golf, a sport that blends precision, technique, and mental focus, has become a passion for Biette. “It’s all a mental game,” he explained. “There are things you can control and things you can’t. You just have to stay focused.”
With the 20th Annual Saskatchewan Open Provincial Championships just around the corner—set to take place in Moose Jaw, the weekend of August 16 to 17 at the Deja Vu Disc Golf Course—Biette is deep into preparation. His training includes daily practice on local courses, with a strong emphasis on putting. “If you can putt, you’re good,” he said. “I know these courses like the back of my hand.”
Biette’s commitment to the sport goes beyond competition. He credits disc golf with helping him build meaningful relationships and stay active. “It gets you outside and connected,” he said. “The atmosphere is unreal. The tournament directors make everything feel special and welcoming.”
As disc golf continues to grow in popularity, Biette encourages others to give it a try. “Don’t hate it till you try it,” he said. “You don’t need to be a top athlete. Just come out, throw a Frisbee with your friends, and enjoy.”
Spectators are welcome at the upcoming provincials, and Biette hopes to see new faces on the course. “Come check it out,” he said. “We’d be happy to introduce you to the sport and welcome you in.”
