Portage la Prairie’s annual charity softball game between industry giants McCain and Simplot took place Thursday evening at Rotary Republic Park, carrying special meaning this year as players and fans gathered in memory of Scott Williams, a beloved former employee who passed away earlier in 2025 after battling cancer.
The long-running rivalry, known locally as the ‘Battle of the Tater Titans,’ began in 2004 as a way to support cancer care for families connected to both companies.
The event supports Central Plains Cancer Services and their Kids Fighting Cancer programs. It was started by Gary Bergson and Mark Morgan, who had family members battling cancer, and it has become a staple community tradition.

Corey Nichols, a participant and coach for Team Simplot says the event is “just to have fun in the community” while raising money to help kids with cancer.
Though he has played many games before, this year he stepped into a coaching role.
“I'm just getting too old, so I figured I'd just try coaching,” he laughed.

Justin Edinger, of Team McCain, mentions the importance of honouring Scott Williams through the event.
“It's a great opportunity to recognize Scott and to continue to keep his memory alive. It's great to give back to the charity.”
He adds that this is his second year participating in the game.
Edinger also noted the wildfire smoke was a concern but says, “We checked in with both teams and made sure everyone's comfortable with it."
Fans were also treated to a display of classic cars lined up near the ball diamond. Organizers encouraged attendees to bring their vehicles to honour Williams, a known enthusiast of motorcycles and classic cars.

Sharilyn Knox, executive director of Central Plains Cancer Services, expressed her gratitude for the ongoing support.
“We love that the employees of these two amazing organizations have fun while supporting individuals with cancer. They always make it personal. I love working with them all.”
The ‘Battle of the Tater Titans’ is about community spirit, friendly competition and raising funds for a cause that touches many lives in Portage la Prairie and beyond.
