A fire Sunday evening in River Park South has left two families without a home.
The fire broke out just before 7:40 p.m. in a home on Southwalk Bay. It quickly spread to a neighbouring home, resulting in the loss of two houses.
When crews arrived, both homes were well involved, with flames and smoke pouring out of both.
According to the United Firefighters of Winnipeg, no apparatus was available at the nearest station.
"Instead, units had to be dispatched from Stations 3, 14, 9, 22, and 23 — some from as far as 20 minutes away at the time of dispatch," said the UFFW in a post on Facebook.
Crews were forced to fight the fire from the outside of the home. It was declared under control just before 9:30 p.m.
"This incident is a stark reminder of how quickly a fire can grow and spread — often doubling in size every minute," said the UFFW. "Our thoughts are with all community members impacted by today’s devastating fires."
One firefighter was injured and assessed by paramedics at the scene, but did not require a trip to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
The WFPS says one of the homes is expected to be a total loss, while the other sustained significant damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
