A man has been arrested after an off-duty police officer saw him break into a garage in St. Vital.
On August 10, 2025, a 36-year-old male was seen breaking into a garage in the 100 block of Sterling Avenue. Prior to the break in, it was determined that the suspect had stolen merchandise from two stores in St. Vital.
Two separate stores in the 1200 block of 1200 St. Mary's Road reported theft of merchandise between 4:27 p.m. and 5 p.m. The stolen merchandise was valued at over $1,000 combined.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., an off-duty officer saw the suspect attempt to enter a detached garage in the 100 block of Sterling Avenue. The officer identified himself as part of the Winnipeg Police Service and attempted to arrest the suspect. However, the man was not cooperating and bit the officer while being taken into custody. The officer did not require medical attention.
East District patrol officers attended and took custody of the suspect. The stolen property was recovered and returned to the retail stores.
A 36-year-old man has been charged with break and enter with intent, assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, possession of break-in tools, and theft under $5,000.
He was detained in custody.
