RCMP have released more information from Wednesday morning's collision involving a train near Dufrost.
At 7:28 am, St. Pierre RCMP responded to the crash along Highway 23 at Road 18E.
According to police, a semi-truck was travelling west along Highway 23 and attempted to stop at the train crossing but could not stop in time. The driver swerved into the ditch on the north side of the road to avoid a collision with the train. Police say the 57-year-old male driver from the Rural Municipality of Montcalm was transported to hospital for precautionary measures.
Another westbound semi-truck hauling gravel collided with the back end of the train, and the truck subsequently caught fire. Police say the 53-year-old male driver from Winnipeg was uninjured.
According to police, heavy fog was a contributing factor in the crash.
Highway 23 will be closed until further notice as the result of damage to the roadway and debris on the road. Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is overseeing the repairs.
St. Pierre RCMP continue to assist CP Police with the investigation.
According to Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), as a result of the collision, a set of wheels on a loaded rail car carrying rock came off the rail. The involved train moved through the crossing before stopping. The wheels were put back on the rail Wednesday afternoon, and the train continued on. There were no injuries to the crew aboard the train. CPKC crews will be working to repair damage to the crossing surface damaged in the truck collision.
