Two semi-trucks and a train were involved in a Wednesday morning collision that shut down Highway 23 near Dufrost.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP responded at 7:28 a.m. on August 13 to the crash on Highway 23 at Road 18 East, in the Rural Municipality of DeSalaberry.

A westbound semi-truck tried to stop at the train crossing but couldn’t in time. The driver swerved into the north ditch to avoid hitting the train. The 57-year-old driver from the RM of Montcalm was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Another westbound semi, hauling gravel, hit the back of the train and caught fire. The 53-year-old Winnipeg man was uninjured.

“The heavy fog was a contributing factor in the collision,” notes Manitoba RCMP.

The train continued its route and no further injuries were reported.

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure crews were called to make repairs.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP continue to assist CP Police with the investigation.

According to Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), as a result of the collision, a set of wheels on a loaded rail car carrying rock came off the rail. The involved train moved through the crossing before stopping. The wheels were put back on the rail Wednesday afternoon, and the train continued on.

There were no injuries to the crew aboard the train.

CPKC crews will be working to repair damage to the crossing surface damaged in the truck collision.
