Since its launch in December 2021, Innovate Cochrane has been working to build community by strengthening local businesses. Through this work, Founder and Board Chair Nathan Klassen says they saw a gap in support for Cochrane’s business and organizational leaders.

“We responded by working with an organization in Calgary to create a model for learning and building connections for a diverse group of leaders in town.”

This led to the launch of the Community Innovation Ecosystem Program, or CIE Program – an eight-month initiative designed to help Cochrane’s small and medium-sized organizations grow, adapt, and scale.

Who should apply

Klassen says the CIE Program welcomes a wide range of participants, from local bakeries and growing charities to public-service providers and for-profit businesses.

“The ideal fit is an organization with anywhere from three to 500 employees that has been operating successfully for at least three years with a consistent monthly income. Most importantly, it’s for leaders who are ready to invest in new ideas for their organization and are open to receiving coaching and mentorship to achieve their growth goals.”

What the journey includes

Applicants who join CIE Cohort III next month can expect a hands-on, structured yet flexible journey.

“They’ll go through six interactive learning modules – these are hands-on workshops on topics like understanding your team, creating a flow of new ideas, and building long-term resilience,” says Klassen.

Participants will also engage in six peer-focused roundtables to share insights, challenges, and advice. Additionally, each team will receive monthly one-on-one coaching with a growth expert. The journey starts and ends with an Innovation Maturity Assessment and culminates in the creation of a Strategic Innovation Blueprint – a flexible roadmap that charts real progress.

Practical highlights

Two standout modules embody the program’s practical intent: “Simplifying Problem Solving” and “Strategic Foresight.” Klassen says the former gives leaders a clear model to break down complex issues and find effective solutions. The latter “isn’t about guessing the future, but about equipping your organization to anticipate changes in the market or community, so you’re not just reacting, but you’re prepared and ready to lead the way.”

Proven impact

Fourteen organizations have already graduated as Certified Community Innovators. From Osprey Integrity and Two Pharmacy, to Helping Hands Society of Cochrane, Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, Found Books & Store, Quirk Social, and Route 22 Artist Collective & Gallery, alumni span for-profit, non-profit, and creative sectors.

“It’s an incredible networking-building opportunity – especially for organizations that tend to engage within their sector only,” says Klassen. “It’s incredible what they’ve learned from each other – different models, different ideas, even different skills. It’s also helped non-profits build their Board of Directors! It’s a great recruiting platform.”

Why here, why now

Unlike programs you might find in Calgary, Innovate Cochrane offers something rooted firmly in the community.

“This is really about community-building, and our unique geography and growth creates challenges and opportunities for our local businesses,” Klassen notes.

The program is delivered in person, right here in Cochrane, with a deep focus on local relationships – and a built-in support network that continues beyond the eight months.
