Pink is the colour, battle against breast cancer the cause

There'll be plenty of pink at the SLS Centre this Saturday with the return of the annual Pink in the Rink game of the U18 AA Bow Valley Timberwolves.

It's become a tradition of this, and other Timberwolves teams, to help create awareness and raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. Funds from the U18 game will support the fight against breast cancer.

As inflation ticks lower to 1.8% in December, economists expect further BoC rate cuts

Canada's annual inflation rate ticked lower in December, thanks in part to Ottawa's temporary GST tax break, but economists still see interest rate cuts on the horizon as potential tariffs loom.

Statistics Canada said Tuesday the annual inflation reading for December came in at 1.8 per cent, down from 1.9 per cent in November. 

The report noted restaurant food purchases and alcohol bought from stores contributed the most to the deceleration — items which were subject to the tax reprieve, along with children's clothes and toys, among others.

Public policing committee in the works

A proposed bylaw is expected to be presented to town council on Jan. 27 to lay the groundwork for the creation of a municipal policing committee (MPC).

On Jan. 20, Jay Judin, Cochrane public safety director, presented an initial draft of the bylaw for review by town council. While largely supported, concern was raised over the cost being mandated by the province and councillors questioned the inclusion of a proposed per diem for committee members.

Local initiatives continue to be supported by gov't grant program

Cochrane area nonprofit organizations are among the 226 groups recently awarded grants through the latest round of Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) and Community Initiatives Program (CIP) funding.

Bike Cochrane received $77,725 towards the upgrade of its downtown LaunchPad Bike Park and $68,085 for the Frank Wills Memorial Hall.

Cochrane sets up tribute mailbox for fallen Grandfather Tree

The town of Cochrane has set up a special mailbox and community journal at the site of the fallen Grandfather Tree.

This will allow Cochrane residents to share stories and pay tribute to the iconic community landmark. 

Community members have rallied together since news spread that the 300-year-old white spruce tree fell during a strong windstorm overnight Thursday. 

Team Canada advances to FISU curling semifinals

Team Canada's women's curling team has advanced to the semifinals against Japan at the World University Games in Torino, Italy.

The team, which includes Cochrane curler Zoe Cinnamon, won their final game in the round-robin against China, 6-3, to advance to the playoffs. Should they win today, they compete in the gold medal final.

As expected, the competition is tight between the top teams with wins and losses being exchanged between the top four. Canada was 7-2 in round-robin play, with their only losses coming at the hands of the Japanese and Norwegians.
