Alberta transportation minister wants bike lanes gone, critics say stay in your lane

Alberta's transportation minister is calling on the province's two major cities to remove bike lanes from key roadways, prompting critics to say the government is overstepping and making an issue out of nothing.

Devin Dreeshen says he's trying to avoid clashes with the government's goal of expanding road networks, as he blames bike lanes for traffic congestion and obstructing work to build the infrastructure needed for Alberta's growing population.

Cochrane Activettes offer up two $4,500 bursaries for local students

The Cochrane Activettes are inviting local students to apply for two bursaries, each valued at $4,500.

The awards started as a way to mark the organization’s 35th anniversary and have grown to becoming a insturmental way to support youth in the Cochrane area pursuing post-secondary education.

Applicants must be 21 or younger as of June 1, 2025, and be graduates of a Cochrane high school.

Former Alberta minister details allegation Premier Smith purposely misled cabinet

An outspoken member of Alberta's legislature, booted from the United Conservative Party caucus, is airing more detailed allegations of what he calls government deception over a health-care contract scandal.

Peter Guthrie resigned as infrastructure minister in February and is accusing Premier Danielle Smith and Health Minister Adriana LaGrange of deliberately misleading a Jan. 30 cabinet committee meeting over procurement issues.

"I didn't step down because nothing happened," he said.

Alberta names new interim chief medical officer of health

The Alberta government has announced the appointment of a new interim chief medical officer of health, days after the previous one's contract expired.

Officials say Dr. Sunil Sookram is to serve in the role on a temporary basis as arrangements are finalized for a "longer-term appointment."

Sookram is currently the facility medical director and chief of medical staff at Strathcona Community Hospital in Sherwood Park, east of Edmonton.

Country fans in Cochrane have reason to celebrate as breakout Canadian star Teigen Gayse will take the stage as the Friday night headliner for this year’s Bow Valley Boot Stomp.

The B.C. born, Nashville-based singer will take the stage July 18 for what she promises will be a “high-energy, fun” performance.

Three of five candidates for the revised Yellowhead federal riding are scheduled to appear at the Springbank election candidates forum, organized by the Springbank Community Association.

Liberal Michael Fark, NDP candidate Avni Soma and Conservative William Stevenson have all confirmed their attendance at the forum, set for Tuesday, April 22, at the Springbank Heritage Club, 244168 Range Road 33. The forum begins at 7 p.m.

Vicky Bayford of the People’s Party of Canada and Dale Heath of the Christian Heritage Party have not confirmed their attendance.
