Alberta NDP Leader Nenshi fighting for seat in one of three byelections

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi is looking to finally win a seat in the legislature after a year of sitting on the sidelines.

He's running in one of three provincial byelections today as a candidate in Edmonton-Strathcona, where his predecessor, former premier Rachel Notley, last won 80 per cent of the vote.

Also vying for the Edmonton-Strathcona seat is United Conservative Party candidate Darby Crouch.

Jacobs win over judges with Summer of '69

Siblings Meghana and Milan Jacobs won over both the judges and the crowd to top the youth music talent contest at Sunday’s Treble Trouble event.

They chose to perform the Bryan Adams classic Summer of ’69, with Meghana on keytar and backup vocals, and Milan on lead vocals and guitar.

Over the last few weeks, the pair developed a slightly altered version of the song for their performance in front of a packed house at the Cochrane Lions Event Centre.

Passage of Bill C-202 brings mixed reviews and concerns over future trade talks

Canada's supply managed sector is breathing a sigh of relief with the passage of Bill C-202 which protects it from any further concessions in future trade talks.

An identical bill died on the order paper in the last session but this time moved quickly through Parliament and the Senate, before receiving Royal Assent last week.

The Dairy Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Egg Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada, and the Canadian Hatching Egg Producers issued a joint statement supporting the legislation. 

RCMP identify second victim of Banff rockfall as man, 33, from Surrey, B.C.

The second person killed in a rockfall last week in Banff National Park  has been identified as a 33-year-old man from Surrey, B.C. 

RCMP did not provide a name and say no more information will be provided.

Two people were killed and three more injured when a slab of mountain gave way last Thursday, raining rock down on hikers at Bow Glacier Falls.

The three injured were later listed in stable condition.

The second deceased person has previously been identified as 70-year-old Jutta Hinrichs, a retired university professor from Calgary.

Parks Canada says site of fatal rockfall in Banff National Park remains closed

Parks Canada says the site remains closed where a rockfall killed two hikers and injured three more last week in Banff National Park.

Spokeswoman Amy Krause says safety is the agency's top priority and it is considering all options before reopening Bow Glacier Falls.

A slab of mountain broke loose last Thursday afternoon and rained rock down on a popular hiking trail near the falls, about 200 kilometres northwest of Calgary.

One of the two deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Jutta Hinrichs, a retired university professor from Calgary.

Second victim in Banff rockslide identified

Lake Louise RCMP have confirmed the identity of the second person killed in last week’s rockslide on the Bow Falls Trail in Banff National Park.

The victim was a 33-year-old man from Surrey, B.C.

RCMP previously reported that 70-year-old Jutta Hinrichs of Calgary was also killed in the incident, which occurred Thursday.

Three other hikers were injured and airlifted to hospital. They have since been listed in stable condition.

Cochrane soaked by weekend downpour

It was a soggy weekend in Cochrane, with the community hit hard by a significant rainfall event that drenched much of southern Alberta.

Crawford Luke, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says the Cochrane area was right in the middle of the heaviest precipitation.

“Cochrane was pretty close to the bullseye for this event,” Luke explained. “We have a station just west of Cochrane, near Highway 1 before Canmore, that recorded 93.7 millimetres of rain. Based on area observations, Cochrane likely saw anywhere from 70 to 90 millimetres.”
