The City of Moose Jaw has announced that two new pieces of public art have been installed at the Tourism Moose Jaw visitor’s centre.

The two pieces are art are a metal baby bison sculpture and a full-sized Red River Cart. Both pieces of art were installed earlier this month.

The Red River Cart was proposed by the New Southern Plains Métis Local #160 in 2023. It was approved by the city’s Public Art Committee and city council. The piece is constructed of unpainted steel and the cart honours the history and culture of the Métis people. The cart played an important role in transportation and trade across the Northern Plains before railroads and highways.

The baby bison sculpture was created by local artist Bill Keen and his wife Laurette and was approved by the Public Art Committee earlier this year.

This sculpture was designed as a companion piece to the existing life-sized steel bison created by Keen and installed at the site in 2023.

The calf sculpture was donated to the city, with all the fabrication and installation costs covered by Keen.

Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Tourism Moose Jaw visitor’s centre to check out these unique pieces of artwork.
