Yesterday was a scorcher, but how hot was it? According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Moose Jaw was the hotspot not just provincially but also nationwide, topping out at a balmy 31.0°C.
Moose Javian's are in for several more days of persistent heat, and Meteorologist Crawford Luke says that we could hold that top spot again in the near future.
“Saskatchewan will probably continue to be the hot spot in the country, frankly, for today, tomorrow, even Wednesday perhaps. So, I wouldn't be surprised if Moose Jaw or another place in Southern Saskatchewan ended up being the highest place in the country again today and for the next couple of days.”
Temperatures are expected to sit well into the 30’s until at least the mid-week, and while things are going to be rather toasty, it shouldn’t be record breaking.
“It’s going to be a little tough to break some of these records. For today and the next few days, (the records) are all around the 36-to-37-degree mark,” Luke said.
“We're definitely going to be close, but some of these previous records are pretty hot, so they're going to be a little hard to top.”
Moose Jaw will also be met with some rather high humidex values which will make things feel closer to 40°C in many locations in and around the city.
“I wouldn't be surprised If we get some heat warnings coming out for good chunks of Saskatchewan, either later today or tomorrow,” said Luke.
While there is some precipitation in the forecast, those hoping for some moisture shouldn’t hold their breath.
“It definitely looks to be on the dry side... might be some isolated thunderstorms Tuesday night... wouldn’t be surprised if you even made it through the week without getting into any of those showers or thunderstorms.”
The silver lining is that from Wednesday onwards things will return to more seasonal conditions, with uninterrupted sunshine and temperatures hovering around the mid-to-high 20’s through to next week.
