Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre is returning to the House of Commons, having won his by-election in Battle River-Crowfoot.
Poilievre took 80.4 per cent of the vote in a running against 213 other candidates.
Local MP Fraser Tolmie shared his reaction in a written statement:
“I want to congratulate Pierre for working hard to earn the trust of Battle River-Crowfoot constituents and securing a path back to the House of Commons so he can hold this government to account more effectively as Leader of the Opposition.”
“I’d like to specifically thank Andrew Scheer for his capable leadership in the House of Commons for the past several months. His experience and reputation were instrumental in ensuring that Conservatives continued to be effective in the House in Pierre’s absence, and our party owes him greatly for stepping up to the plate during such an important moment.”
“I also want to wish former MP Damien Kurek well as he now focuses on his family farm and rebuilding after the loss of his father. I know he will continue to serve his community in this new capacity, and I look forward to welcoming him back into the House of Commons at some point in the future.”
“It’s impossible to say what the future holds for our party, or when the next election will be, but I’m grateful for Pierre’s leadership and I’m looking forward to returning to the House of Commons with my colleagues where we will fully dedicate ourselves to holding this government to account and fighting for better outcomes for all Canadians.”
