The City of Winnipeg is taking additional steps to help in the fight against homelessness.
Along with the Province of Manitoba and non-profit partners, five new supportive housing residences are coming to the City.
“Supportive housing is a proven, effective tool in reducing homelessness, with long-term benefits for residents and neighbourhoods,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a news release.
“These five sites represent the first phase of my commitment to provide City land for supportive housing, with more to come next year. I’m grateful that Premier Kinew’s government will be a partner to make sure these new units are built quickly and serviced safely.”
The five City-owned sites that have been selected are 546 Sherburn Street, 1168/1172 Plessis Road, 626 Stella Avenue, 75 Poseidon Bay, and 2546 McPhillips Street.
Winnipeggers are invited to attend one of the three open houses to learn more about the sites.
The open houses are at Transcona East End Community Centre on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Bill and Helen Norrie Library on Thursday, September 4, 2025 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The new supportive housing provides safe and stable homes with several services, including wrap-around health, wellness, and safety services. These homes are designed for people who need both housing and support.
The units will provide shelter for people at key life stages, including:
- Refugees and refugee claimants
- People leaving hospitals
- Youth exiting care
- People transitioning from encampments
- People at risk of gender-based violence
- People with mental health needs
