Moose Jaw’s heat wave has topped the charts once again, securing our place as the hottest in the nation and shattering a record in the process.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, yesterday’s heat peaked at 36.6°C, edging out the previous record of 36.4°C set back in 2020.

While temperatures soared in communities across southern Saskatchewan, meteorologist Crawford Luke was surprised to see that we were the only location to break a record yesterday.

“I just assumed there'd be a handful of others. It looks like Regina kind of stopped at 34.6°C, that was the second hottest place (in Saskatchewan),” he said.

“Assiniboia also got to 34.6°C, and there were a lot of places into the 30s, but for whatever reason (Moose Jaw’s temperatures) kind of took off.”

He added that while high temperatures and humidity typically create the perfect conditions for inclement weather such as major thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes, Environment Canada hadn’t received any reports as of this morning.

Yesterday’s heat warning continues today, and temperatures are set to crest over the 30° mark in southern Saskatchewan, but Luke doesn’t expect the heat to be record-breaking.

“I think yesterday was the hottest day of the stretch. Today’s record is 36.1 though, so I mean, we'll see. We overachieved a little bit yesterday,” he said, noting that a reprieve from high temperature is on its way soon.

“It looks like this evening that cold front will be coming through. Tomorrow should be a much cooler day with a pretty breezy northwest wind... So, a lot more comfortable, pleasant weather is coming for the rest of the week and into the weekend after this hot day today.”
