Some more information has been released about Netflix's upcoming western show, which filmed in Calgary, The Abandons.

According to Screenrant.com, the western series is still in pre-production, but could be the perfect follow-up to HBO's Deadwood.

The series' plot revolves around a corrupt force of wealth and power that covets the lands of a group of diverse and atypical families and tries to drive them out. They must pursue their Manifest Destiny, shared the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).

The Abandons is a 10-episode series starring Emmy-award-winning actresses Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey. Filming in the area began this spring.

Five-time nominee Headey, arguably best known for portraying Cersei Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones, will star opposite Anderson as another wealthy matriarch who adopts four orphans. The series creator and executive producer is Kurt Sutter, who was also the producer for Sons of Anarchy and The Shield.

"The Abandons' showrunner, Kurt Sutter, also mentioned that the show is examining the line between good and evil, with a particular emphasis on how corruption can influence that line. That's exactly what Deadwood did through characters like Al Swearengen and E.B. Farnum. It also seems like The Abandons will be steeped in several shades of moral grayness, just like Deadwood was," explained Screenrant.

The Abandons began filming in Calgary in mid-May 2024 and wrapped up in October of the same year. No release date has been set for the show.

A casting call was held for the show when it was filming in the province.

Another Alberta filmed Netflix show, My Life With the Walter Boys, season two, is set to release next week.

Nikki Rodriguez, Noah LaLonde and Ashby Gentry are the lead roles in the series as they play Jackie, Cole and Alex.

The 10-episode first season, which premiered in 2023, told the story of 15-year-old Jackie Howard, a Manhattan teen who moves to rural Colorado after a family tragedy. She goes to live with her late mother’s best friend, who is raising ten kids, and soon finds herself torn between two of the Walter brothers.
