This week’s KPMG Taste of Summer Charity BBQ was a big success, as South Eastman English and Literacy Services (SEELS) brought in $1,492 in donations.
SEELS is a non-profit organization providing language and literacy programs to adults. The charity aims to support anyone 18 and older in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills needed for daily and working life.
Amanda Piche, program coordinator at SEELS, says they help students reach their goals —whether that is to graduate, learn better communication, or brush up on certain skills before entering post-secondary education.
“If people have never read before in their lives, we help them with that, and it goes all the way up to university level,” she explains.
Piche says she is grateful for the community's support.
“Our whole program thanks everyone who put so much work into putting this together. We really appreciate it."
The donations from this week’s BBQ will directly support SEELS in improving classroom spaces with upgraded equipment, creating accessible and digitized learning materials, and additional teaching materials.
“A big amount like this is going to go towards making our classroom so much more supportive for our learners,” she notes.
“This means a lot because we care so much about meeting all their needs... We’d like to help in as many ways as we can.”
Missed the BBQ? Come down to the Steinbach Credit Union on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the rest of August.
Lunch includes a smokie, a bag of chips, and condiments for a minimum donation of $2.
