Portage–Lisgar MP Branden Leslie is hosting a series of community barbecues this week, giving people in smaller towns a chance to connect with him outside of election season. The first takes place Monday in St. Claude, followed by events in Morris, Morden, and Plum Coulee.
Leslie notes, “I am obviously excited trying to spend as much time in the various many communities that I represent, but I find that community barbecues are a great opportunity. People want to come out for a dog or a burger and let me know what’s on their mind. Obviously, the politics of the election has passed. We’re back to, I think, business and there is a lot of ongoing challenges facing our country.”
He points to international trade issues as one of the major concerns still affecting rural Manitobans. The recent 75 per cent tariff on canola from China, combined with earlier restrictions on pork, oil, and seafood, has created new barriers for farmers and exporters. Leslie says these global policies have direct consequences for people in the riding.
Opportunities for open conversation
Leslie adds, “Any chance I get to hear the impact from folks, it’s time well spent in my view. So it’s a great opportunity to just connect, to get the chance to meet with people. Obviously, I knocked on a lot of doors during the election campaign and not everybody is in the mood too or has the time to talk at those moments.”
He explains that the barbecues are meant to be relaxed gatherings, where residents can share what is on their minds without the pressures of a campaign. Leslie says he values being accessible and making time to listen in communities that often do not get as much direct attention.
Looking ahead to fall
Leslie continues, “We can talk more about politics and less about community, because there’ll be lots going on when we come back this fall. Obviously lots of promises are made in the election. Now it’s time to see if any of them are gonna come to happen.”
He plans to return in September for a longer conversation about the federal government’s agenda and what it will mean for Portage–Lisgar. For now, the focus is on burgers, hot dogs, and the chance to meet face-to-face with constituents across the riding.
