As the new school year looms, the Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) Trojans football team is already deep into their pre-season preparations, led by newly appointed head coach Alec Zebrun. With a strong core of returning players, fresh talent, and a strong team culture, expectations are high for the upcoming season.

Zebrun, who steps into the head coaching position following the departure of Brendon Brydges, brings experience and familiarity to the position.

"It wasn't necessarily a promotion I was looking for," Zebrun said. "I would've been very happy if Brendon was still with us… but I'm really proud of the group of players we have. You can feel that culture that's been built here."

Zebrun has already run three practices with his team and is encouraged by what he's seeing from both returning players and the new.

“We've been getting in the swing of things," he explained. "Lots of learning, especially for the new players, tackling, blocking, schemes, and just football in general. But our veteran players have been great leaders and really welcoming."

Among the standout leaders are fourth-year players Maddox Fisette and Eric Bruce, a rarity in high school football. Also leading the charge are seniors Kingston Daniels, described as a “heavy hitter” at linebacker, and Max Johnson, a consistent and quietly impactful rush end.

"They're not just great players, they're great people," Zebrun added.

The team's leadership extends into the secondary with Grade 12s Damien Chavez and Dominic Nichols, who both contribute significantly on defense and special teams.

One of the most exciting returning players is quarterback Kailum Chopp, who had a standout Grade 10 season in 2024.

"Last year, Kailum was one touchdown pass off the league record," Zebrun said. "We're thrilled to have him back. He leads our offense."

Supporting him will be a strong offensive line, including seniors Harley Utech and Dylan Henderson, and rising star Logan Deurbouck, who was named Rookie of the Year in the Winnipeg High School Football League last season.

"As I always tell them, they're the ones that lead us into the fight," said Zebrun. "They set the tone for our team."

The Trojans also welcome back a notable returning female player, Destiny Dearlove, who will play corner and special teams.

"She's really a very physical player, will play special teams, and always in the mix," said Zebrun. "We're really proud to have her."

The season kicks off on the road, with the Trojans’ home opener set for September 12.

Of their seven regular-season games, four will be played at home, a win for the team after lobbying the league for more home dates.

"We'll be home for most of October, including the last three games of the season," Zebrun said. "It's a great opportunity for the community to come out and support us."

With a mix of experienced veterans, promising underclassmen, and a dedicated coaching staff, the Trojans are poised for another great season.

"I'm just glad I can help provide these players with the opportunity to grow, not just in football, but as people," Zebrun said. "This team has something special."
