Nickle Lake Regional Park will be bustling with activity this weekend as the Weyburn Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League is hosting their annual Slo-Pitch and Cornhole tournament fundraiser. Starting with the first slo-pitch game at 6:30 P.M. this Friday evening, 14 teams will take over the three ball diamonds at Nickle Lake, all in support of the Weyburn Gymnastics Club. Carrie Nankivell, president of the Weyburn Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League, explains what’s going on and how this weekend helps sports organizations in Weyburn.

“So, basically, it's a tournament that we have every August, and we run it as a great fundraiser for the community. This year, we are raising funds for the Weyburn Gymnastics Club. So, all funds will be raised for them and so this weekend we are hosting 14 teams. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be the games and then Saturday as well, we're going to host a Home Run Derby in the later evening and then also a Cornhole tournament as well to go with it to keep people in the beer gardens and just to have a good evening.”

Registration for slo-pitch teams have already closed, but those wanting to enjoy a weekend at Nickle Lake and take in some slo-pitch are more than welcome to attend. Registration for teams of two for the Cornhole tournament will take place Saturday night at the beer garden and it is $20. The cornhole tournament is a double knockout style, meaning you play until you lose twice.

As mentioned, they will have beer gardens as well as a food truck as Melissa Carson from The Grub Shack & General Store will be there covering the food. This tournament is an annual tournament designed to help raise funds for sports organizations throughout Weyburn. Nankivell talks about the history of this tournament.

“This tournament has been running in August for more years than I can count. I know I've been running it for at least 10 years where we've been putting it towards different kids’ sporting events. We used to have consistently 16 teams are higher for tournaments, but once COVID-19 hit, we really went lower. Most of our tournaments are around, usually 10 teams or so. So, we're at 14 this year so that makes us really happy that we have quite a few coming out. We have, I believe it is six teams from out of town that are coming.”

They have previously fundraised for organizations like the Weyburn Skating Club, Weyburn Canoe & Kayak Club, Inclusion Weyburn, and more. For more information about the annual Slo-Pitch and Cornhole tournament or the Weyburn Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League, follow their Facebook page.
